[ predictable is the right word. predictable and easy, if not particularly glamorous, and there was a period (a shamefully long one) in which ron thought the loss of that was somehow harry's fault. but that was just picking an easy target - things were falling apart all on their own, and ron lost the luxury of keeping delusions and petty grudges when their world was at stake.

it's a steadier sort of friendship, now. what it was in the best of times, minus the selfish and frightened push and pull. the only real remnant of the low times is the vague sense of guilt ron feels on occasion, usually wrapped up in the quiet, lingering grief of the war. but he's still selfish or cowardly enough to not act on it, maintains that it's never the right time to bring up such a downer of a conversation when things are... well, they're good. surprisingly good. the world's much quieter, and sometimes much sadder, but it's theirs.

it's sitting on the sofa next to harry while his family sleeps soundly, no threat of monsters banging down the front door. nightmares were the occasional thing, of course, but for the most part it's been ridiculously easy to relax in the aftermath - probably because none of them could remember the last time they had truly relaxed. ron's watching the fireplace, mind idly trying to make sense of the fact that he's not particularly concerned about the possibility of everything going tits up again, when harry interrupts. ]

Right. You know me and luck, we're fast friends. [ which sounds an awful lot like a sarcastic no, but he does turn his attention to the offered bag, half-heartedly reaching in to pick one out before idly inspecting it. it's hard to tell them apart in the firelight, so he's not in any rush. ]

I honestly don't think I could keep it down. Is that a thing that happens when you get old? Not being able to eat everything in sight?

[ "old". ]

HEH HEH HEh also you are perfect as always hush

['Old', yeah. They've crammed a lot of living into their eighteen years. The world, in this period of denouement, can feel quiet and weirdly calm, and slow, as if they're in retirement. And honestly, it feels a little temporary, too, as if there will suddenly be some additional horcrux.

But there isn't. Harry rubs at his scar again, more thoughtful this time.]

No, it's a thing that happens when you get around your mum. You were used to it, you lived here all your life, but this feeling is what the rest of us always felt. I think she thought we were six people instead of two--and she's doing it all again tomorrow. Might actually die.

[Funny, because he did die, however briefly. He picks a Every-Flavor Bean out for himself, cautiously. Greyish could mean a lot of things.]

Hermione's in tomorrow, isn't she?

[ actually not at all funny, but ron misses the joke anyway. he does notice the way harry fusses at his scar, but they're both quite good at dodging the serious topics - for now, at least. ]

You've got the maths wrong. She'll be cooking for six times that, at least. [ which is ron getting the math wrong on his own joke, as it should technically be times three to carry the theme, but whatever. even if he caught his mistake, the mention of hermione would've waylaid any further commentary on the food situation. ]

Yeah. [ if his tone's a bit sentimental, he's not embarrassed enough to cover for it. ] Feels like I haven't seen her in ages. [ weeks, really, but after their spectacular codepedence (and independence, at least in terms of living on the run instead of split at their folks' houses) it seems like a lifetime. the follow-up is entirely too casual to imply any keen insight. ] You haven't seen Ginny for a few either, have you?

Yeah.

[If his tone's a bit careful, it's because... well, things with Hermione and Ron are sort of a given. Harry isn't the most adept at navigating the ways of girls and women and relationships, and all--he's not exactly clever with emotions, and even if he were, he's been a bit busy for a few years--but by now, it would take a bag over his head not to notice the way Ron gets about Hermione. Whereas things with Ginny had been left a bit strange. Just uncertain-strange, more than anything else, considering their relationship went on hold, and then after the war, there was clean-up and reorganising and...

And. The and doesn't have a great deal of conclusion to it, just a great load of possibility.]

But it's not exactly the same, seeing them at Christmas, is it. [Them lumps Hermione and Ginny into potential-sort-of-girlfriend territory. Is he really going to be able to chat with Ron about his sister in this context? Not that it's utterly foreign, they were together, for a few months there, and Ron was all right with it, but it's still a bit-- weird.] I dunno. I think she's going to want to talk.

[And that could get a bit... bad, which Ron will definitely understand. They're not Talkers, the pair of them. Absently, Harry puts his Every-Flavor Bean into his mouth, and chews... and pulls a face.]

Eurgh-- earwax--

[But sort of thank God for earwax-flavored beans, because he can briefly abandon the topic of Ginny so he can spit the offended candy into his hand.]

random icons at u sorry

[ or he can absolutely not briefly abandon the topic, because around the time harry eats the earwax-flavored bean is exactly the time ron Gets It. he's still holding his own jelly bean, apparently completely forgotten, and he finally turns to look right at harry.

his expression's a mix of - well, it's complicated, isn't it? he got used to the idea back at school, but it's still hard to say whether you're meant to be proud of your best mate for landing a girl or punch him in the face for landing your sister. ]

Talk.

[ it's vaguely accusatory, because why bother with being vague. that crumbles a second later when his brow furrows, and this time it's accusatory in a totally different way; incredulous, maybe. ]

You mean you haven't worked it out yet? [ says ron, who's only been trading bizarrely formal letters with hermoine. they're both dodging around it, themselves. grand confessions are much easier when the world's ending; getting up the courage to write a quiet 'i love you' in a letter when there's no threat looming, that's different. ]

just don't give me sex faces pls

[The expression that briefly twists Harry's face only partially has to do with the taste of earwax--which really is quite foul, thanks. Ron can't linger in a state of accusation for very long--the whole Ginny-and-Harry situation is a been-there-done-that situation as well (but not done, in any sense of the word). It ended up being all right in sixth year. It would be--will be--all right, now, between him and Ron, once everyone got used to the idea again. Including Harry.

The only difference is... well, it's not just school any longer. It's everything, which is the future, which is very, very large. They were busy living day to day during Voldemort's return, but now...]

Well, no. I mean, I was a bit busy, you might remember-- Voldemort, and all?

[But that was over a year ago, now, and...]

And then, I dunno. Then I was still busy, and she was as well, and now she's working on a quidditch career-- [Which is still so cool, by the way--] --and, at some point, I guess it becomes excuses.

[There's a beat. The fire pops. There's a tingling in Harry's ears; they've probably gone a little pink. He should have waited for Hermione and had this talk with her, right? She has a lot more sense than Ron. Ron's brilliant, but...]

And by the way, it's all right you taking that tone with me, but what about you and Hermione?
