[ katniss still isn't sure what to make of johanna mason, the tribute from district seven. she seems vulgar — peeta says the other tributes are deliberately trying to make her uncomfortable, and maybe with finnick and chaff that's true, but katniss thinks johanna might just always be like this. abrasive. shocking. the kind of person to come talk about balls at a fancy party. ]

[ despite herself, katniss wrinkles her nose against a smile. start with the balls, sure. but while the double meaning isn't lost on her, katniss still takes a vol-au-vent and some succulent mud cake. she's not taking any other tribute's advice, not even on the subject of food. ]

I'm not sure it's safe for some of the guests to be near an open flame.

[ the quip is deadpan. for her part, katniss is avoiding the liquor. she's been drunk once, and that was enough. ]
