Even if you're the only one doing it?

[Sirius has only been to the Ministry with his father a few times, and only once near any of the chambers they use for hearings. There was no one like Miles Edgeworth there--or his father. He doesn't know what his father looks like, not really, but he has a picture in his head of what he thinks. Tall, with a kind face that looks like Miles'.]

It's even more important if I'm the only one! If no one else is, that means that there's all the more need for people like me and dad. And, besides, maybe people will follow in our footsteps.

[A pause, and then a slightly guilty grin:]

Plus, if I'm the very first one, I might get famous. Not that being famous would really matter, but it would be nice.

[But Sirius is already shaking his head with great certainty, grinning faintly.]

You'd definitely be famous. Everyone would think you were mental and everyone would know your name and you'd be famous. For sure. D'you think your dad would help you? He doesn't have magic, but he knows laws and things--

[He doesn't even hesitate.]

Oh, yeah, absolutely. My dad is the smartest person I know - it's unbelievable, how smart he is. He'll learn the laws really quick and absolutely help me out. We'll start up a family partnership.

[And that is a brilliant thought, one that Miles loves. He grins big at the thought of it.]

What about you? What are you going to be?

[He'd prefer to talk about Miles' father, to focus on that. It's safe, safer than his own future. Even the thought of the Sorting sort of knots at his stomach. Too much is either uncertain or wrong with the way that he thinks.]

I don't know. [He kicks his feet against the bench again.] I haven't thought about it.

[Miles watches him for a moment, then says with great certainty:]

Then you can come work with me. If you can't figure anything else out.

[That gets a surprised laugh out of him, at least, as he looks around.]

Really?

[A confident nod.]

Absolutely. You're very clever, no question about that. And there'd be plenty of work available even if you weren't keen on being an attorney - you could be a private detective for us, maybe.

[Well, the working bit--yes, he quite likes that--but the word detective makes his nose wrinkle a little.]

What does a detective do?

Detects.

[He gives a guilty little grin for that silly little joke.]

No, they, um - So, the CPS - the prosecutors - they get detectives provided by the police, but sometimes, when we doubt their evidence, we have to bring in investigators ourselves. So they're people who go out, search out clues and evidence, question people, find people who don't want to be found...That sort of thing.

[He rolls his eyes at the joke--but with an indulgent little grin, too--]

That doesn't sound too bad. Like working for the Department of Magical Law Enforcement Patrol, or being a hit wizard. Or an Auror. I'd be an Auror, if I could, so if I worked for you, it would be like that.

[Miles tilts his head curiously to the side.]

An Aura?

Auror. D'you not know about them?

[OH BRILLIANT something he knows about something he can talk about. Sirius brightens, leaning in a little.]

An Auror is a wizard working in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement--highly trained and highly specialised. They go after Dark wizards and investigate crimes of dark magic.

[Miles brightens considerably. Magical lawyer: obviously the coolest job possibility. Auror: number two, it seems.]

That's so cool. What's dark magic?

Any magic that's evil, of course, or done for evil purposes. There's the Unforgivable Curses, those are the obvious--and necromancy, and curses--cursed objects, cursed artifacts--all of the things like that. So it's the job of the Aurors to sort them out, and find the wizards or witches casting the dark magic, and bring them to justice.

[So cool, right?]

[Miles' eyes light up. All right - that might actually be cooler than magical attorney.]

That's...Isn't that a really dangerous job?

[But Miles, for all that he's more thoughtful and cautious than most other boys his age, still asks that with a tone more of admiration than of wariness.]

[Sirius nods, deeply solemn.]

Very dangerous. But very important as well, we need Aurors. They might have the most important jobs in the wizarding world.

Are there that many Dark wizards?

[Sirius hesitates at that, looking down at the floor between them. He isn't certain of why he hesitates, really--the answer is easy to give. But he's just old enough to begin to guess at things, to begin understanding that the world is larger than perhaps he ever thought or understood. And how everyone fits in to that world, how the world is too small to contain some things--]

Not-- too many. But there are enough.

[Miles' answer is cheerful.]

Well, once we get through with them, there'll be none at all.

[He smiles back, quickly--grateful, really grateful for the chance not to think too hard about this, to simply talk about the future like anyone else would--]

You've not changed your mind, have you? Going to be an Auror and not a magical attorney?

Oh, well -

[That is what it had sounded like, isn't it? But - well - Auror sounds absolutely wicked, just so cool. Miles definitely isn't the sort of person who'd go after criminals - he's going to make sure they're treated fairly, like Dad does - but it's hard to argue with the glamour of tracking down evil artefacts and fighting duels and the like - ]

Maybe I could...do both?

[Sirius considers this as well--and then grin, suddenly, pleased by the idea.]

Yeah. You definitely could. Instead of keeping an office with the Aurors at the Ministry, you'd just have your attorney's office--and you could work with people on their cases when you weren't in the field. It would be perfect.

[And Miles brightens, nodding enthusiastically.]

Yeah, that's - that really is perfect. And if you were an Auror, too, we could work together. Which would be pretty fun.

[He nods, pleased that Edgeworth has come to that conclusion for himself. It's what Sirius was thinking, after all.]

We could be partners. We'd be great partners.
